Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, clothes and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
It is an scientific fact that certain habits can lead to certain behavior, that’s why some people argue that children who are allowed to make decision on whatever they like are more likely to be prone to selfishness. Meanwhile, others claim that letting the youngsters decide about issues that affect them is a better way of nurture. As per me, giving the right of freedom is a more reasonable approach to children and has more pros than cons.
Supporters of putting a limit on children’s decisions might think that this way of treatment will help youngsters grow a belief that they cannot do whatever they want and must contemplate their actions before doing it. However, it is undeniable psychological fact that the more you frankly reject someone’s opinion, the more they will protest your said disapproval. Moreover, there is no evidence proves that imposing restraint on a person’s right to choose their own preferable basic necessities such as food, clothes, etc. can educate them to be selfless in any way.
On the other hand, letting the child freely make their own decisions on matter that affect them is advisable because it boosts the child’s self-esteem and confidence, which leads them to more optimistic way of thinking. This treatment also helps the youngster to express their character and taste freely, making them feel more in charge in their own life, which will result in responsible behavior when they grow up.
In other words, I believe that the best approach to educate your children is the harmonized combination of both mentioned trends, which means respecting their own choices sensibly but not blindly. Adults should point it out for the youngsters when they make wrong decisions in life by clarifying why it is not a good idea along with suggesting other better choices.
